Who We Are

We are a coalition of parents, educators and community members who believe that every child with a disability deserves the right to a quality education that prepares him or her for further education, meaningful employment, independent living and full participation in their community.  Our mission is to advocate for effective special education polices, programs and services in FCPS that help to ensure students with disabilities a foundation for long-term success as workers, citizens and members of society.

Why We're Named "FAAPE"

Cooperation and collaboration between families and educators is the fundamental premise of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act - the two federal statutes which guarantee children with disabilities a free, appropriate public education (FAPE).  Ensuring appropriate educational programs and services for children with disabilities requires school divisions and parents to work together as partners.  An active partnership between these prime stakeholders, including policymakers, protects the rights of children with disabilities, encourages continual improvement in special education services and results in more positive individual student outcomes.  FAAPE works to support the process and goals of a child's right to FAPE.

What We Do
